Show your heart some love!

Bad news first. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. But the good news is that it can be prevented. There are ways to lower your risk, and they’re simple things you can add to your daily routine.

Get moving! It’s one of the easiest, best things you can do. A daily dose of physical activity will go a long way in keeping your heart healthy. It doesn’t have to be intense exercise, either:

  • Take a 30-minute walk outside.
  • Go for a bike ride.
  • Try an exercise class.
  • Have a family dance party in the living room!

Manage your stress levels. This is easier said than done because sometimes, life just happens, and stress can’t be avoided. But there are things you can do to manage your stress:

  • Try meditation or yoga.
  • Take a warm bath.
  • Give yourself a few minutes of quiet time.
  • Watch a funny movie.
  • Listen to your favorite music.
  • Read a good book.

Make – and keep – your health a priority. This starts with the most important things, like making your medical appointments. It also means taking your medicine on time and as prescribed. You can also do things like:

  • Get enough quality sleep at night. Try for 7-8 hours.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Cook tasty, heart-healthy meals that are low in sodium and unhealthy fats, including:
    • Vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
    • Fish, poultry, beans, nuts, vegetable oils, fat-free or low-fat dairy items.
  • Limit sugar and other sweeteners.
  • Between meals, have a healthy snack, like a fruit or veggie.

Talk to your doctor about taking care of your heart. They can answer any questions you have. They might also have other ideas and suggestions.

Remember, a healthy heart is a happy heart!
