One of the most important things to remember about diabetes is that it can be managed! Exercise and a healthy diet are two of the best – and easiest – ways to manage diabetes.
Exercise and physical activity of any kind make you feel better. You don’t have to love the gym to start exercising, either. Start small. Walk around your neighborhood. Or, stroll through a nearby park. If you want to up your activity, try a light jog. You can make exercise fun, too! Work out with a friend or loved one. Or, listen to your favorite music or an audiobook. No matter what kind of exercise feels right to you, talk to your doctor before you start. They can help you start slowly and safely.
Another way to manage diabetes is with a healthy diet. But that doesn’t mean your food won’t taste good or figuring out what to eat has to be hard! With the help of a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN/RD) and your doctor, you can create healthy recipes to add to your diet. You can also try some fun, healthy twists on your favorite foods. Eating healthy keeps your glucose, or blood sugar, in a safe and healthy range. Your doctor can help you find an RDN/RD to help you create a meal plan that is the right balance of healthy and exciting!
Besides exercise and a healthy diet, medicine is another way diabetes can be managed. A prescribed medicine can help prevent any complications with diabetes. Your doctor will talk with you and decide if a prescribed medicine is the best option for you.
