Many of the beverages we drink frequently are loaded with sugar and empty calories. With water’s many benefits, it is surprising that so many do not reach for water more often. As water is an essential nutrient, making sure we drink enough is important. Here are several tips from MyPlate to help you make better beverage choices:

Drink water Choose water over other beverages such as regular soda, sports and energy drinks. These sweetened drinks contain a lot of added sugar and unnecessary calories. To add a bit of flavor to your water, experiment with adding different fruits, vegetables or herbs. Orange slices, strawberries, cucumber or mint are great additions.

How much is enough? Let thirst be your guide, but it is also good to drink water before you become thirsty. Many get enough water from the foods we eat and the beverages we drink. Be sure to drink plenty of water if you are very active, live or work in hot conditions or are an older adult.

A thrifty option Water is usually easy on the wallet. By drinking tap water, you save money at home or when dining out. Water filters may improve taste and are fairly inexpensive when compared to bottled water.

Manage calories Being properly hydrated can stave off hunger, and as a result help us consume fewer calories. Additionally, by choosing water over other beverages, you save calories.

Enjoy your beverage When water just won’t do, enjoy the beverage of your choice, but cut back on how much you drink. Remember to check the serving size and the number of servings in the can, bottle or container. Smaller cans, cups or glasses may help you consume less.

Water on the go Water is always convenient. Bring a water bottle with you wherever you go. Reusable bottles are also easy on the environment.

What is your favorite beverage? How do you stay hydrated?
