Stop the Diets, Get a “Life”

February 07, 2012 / Michael M. Siegel, MD

When I tried to lose weight years ago I was never successful. I would starve myself to lose a few pounds but I would always gain it back. Finally I realized that achieving a healthy weight was not just about dieting but about changing my life. I needed to look not only at how much I ate but also at the types of foods I ate, as well as how much I was exercising.

I had to change my lifestyle, which included my eating habits but also included how active I was. Without looking at the big picture, it is easy to fall into the trap of yo-yo dieting, which is very unhealthy. In 2009, Molina Healthcare actually broke the Guinness World Record for simultaneous yo-yoing to bring attention to this issue. You can watch some highlights in the video below.

The bottom line is: unless you look at the big picture when dieting, over 90% of the time you will regain the weight within a year. Have you successfully lost weight and kept it off? Share your experience in the comments below!
