It is well documented that exercise improves our health and happiness, however, many fail to get started thinking they need to follow a regimented program. That is not the case. The best exercise of all is the one you actually do. People of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities can benefit from a physically active lifestyle. Follow the tips from MyPlate below to increase your activity:
Be active your way Mix it up and have fun! Find several activities you love to do, whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, Zumba after work or gardening on the weekends. Try a number of activities to see what you like best and to add variety.
Set a weekly goal If you are just starting, build up slowly to prevent injury. Set a weekly goal, such as minutes of activity or miles covered, and aim to meet or exceed your goal each week. The more time you spend being physically active, the more health benefits you will receive.
Use the buddy system Activities with friends or family are more enjoyable than doing them alone and will keep you accountable. Start a walking group, attend fitness classes or play with you kids outside. Your buddies will encourage you to keep active.
Make active choices throughout the day Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a walk on your lunch break or park further from work and walk. Every little bit of activity adds up to improve health and provide protection from chronic disease. What is your favorite way to be active?
