Berries are some of nature’s most effective — and tasty — health boosting treats that have a variety of benefits to our bodies. Recent studies are beginning to uncover the cancer-fighting, weight-shedding, brain-boosting qualities of berries, so let us take a step back and look at what it is that makes berries so special. A few unique qualities of berries include:
- They’re high in Antioxidants.
In fact, berries are loaded with them. Antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E, all protect cells from damage and possibly from disease.
- They contain Resveratrol
This is found in grapes and some other berries, as well as in red wine and even dark chocolate. Resveratrol helps lower inflammation, prevent clogged arteries, and offer cancer protection.
- They’re full of Flavonoids
These nutrients help protect against cancer, inflammation, and heart disease. Berries like blackberries and raspberries are full of flavonoids so be sure to make them a part of your diet.
In addition to being a great source for fiber, they're rich in vitamin A, C, E and contain a bit of iron and calcium too. More importantly, blackberries contain something called phenols, which may help prevent cardiovascular disease and even cancer.
The blueberry is your go-to berry for high levels of antioxidants. In addition to antioxidants, they’re also very high in fiber and vitamin C!
These tasty little berries have high levels of disease fighting phenols as well as ellagic acid — a compound with anti-cancer properties.
One of the most popular berries in the U.S., strawberries are also very high in phenols which are responsible for protecting us from disease and promoting good health. They’re also chocked full of B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, iodine, folate, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and copper.
This summer, be sure to load up on a variety of berries and bring their “total body” benefits into your daily life!
